Ubuntu Hardy Heron

April 25th 2008

I was going to write up details about my thoughts on switching from Ubuntu 7.10 to 8.04. But many people will compose the same reports, and with better accuracy and clarity. So I only want to touch on a few things.

Actually, just one thing.

I love Linux—except for the atrocious file system—but I have to wonder, why is it 2008 and I still can't plug an external monitor into my laptop and just have the Goddamn thing fucking work. Anything I try to do involving Xinerama ends with me in the corner, crying in the fetal position like a prison rape victim wishing someone would just shank him to death. As a programmer, I understand that there are often considerable difficulties in getting anything to ‘just work’. But as I user, I don't care. From my own experience, Windows and Mac have had this whole, tricky, dual-monitor problem solved for a while now. So why do I still have to put up with it on Linux?

Other than that, loving Ubuntu.
